Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders

It is of great importance to mention that during aging there is a natural deceleration of metabolism, and a series of changes in energy regulation.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic Syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems. You may have only one risk factor, but people often have several of them at the same time. If you have at least three of them, it is called metabolic syndrome. These risk factors include:

  • Having a high level of triglycerides, a type of fat found in the blood
  • Having a low level of HDL cholesterol: HDL is sometimes called “good” cholesterol because it helps remove cholesterol from arteries
  • Having high blood pressure: If your blood pressure stays high over time, it can damage your heart and lead to other health problems
  • Have high fasting blood sugar: Mildly high blood sugar can be an early sign of diabetes

The more factors you have, the higher your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Metabolic Syndrome poses a public health challenge worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (up to 5 times more risk) and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (up to 2-3 times more risk). In addition, its prevalence is increasing worldwide, which can cause an increase in cardiovascular mortality in the coming years. Although Metabolic Syndrome was described almost 2 decades ago by Reaven, in recent years this disease has generated enormous interest in the scientific community today.
